Damn! Did I mention that I want to work for Carmine Coyote?

Monday, September 25th, 2006

The Slow Leadership article, The Freedom to Choose . . . and the Time to do it, written on Sept. 22 by Carmine Coyote states: Along with the technological ability to supervise people more closely than ever before, executives seem to have lost the willingness to grant people true authority to do their jobs.

Another Uninspired Vacation – Part IIIb – Portrait of an Oenophile

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Dad got me interested in wine, many years ago by introducing me to V. Sattui’s Gamay Rouge. This wine is ruby colored, fruity, and something about it makes it seem ever-so-slightly carbonated to me (even though it is not). I had never cared for white wines (I’d only had Chardonnay) or red-wines (I’d only had Burgandy or Cabernet), but Gamay Rouge was something I could get behind.

Another Uninspired Vacation – Part IIIa – Walla Walla Wines

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Despite my grumpy start to the uninspired family vacation, I had a nice time at Wallowa Lake. We awoke to a dusting of snow one morning and enjoyed the wood fireplace in Pine Cone in the evenings. When it was time to head to the valley, I felt sad. However, the promise of wine lay ahead. That made leaving the mountains more palatable. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Give me wine to wash me clean from the weather-stains of care.”

Another Uninspired Vacation – Part I – The Family Motto

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

I did a crazy thing. I suggested a vacation with my father, my brother, and my in-laws! It sounded like a good idea at first, then I recalled my last combined family vacation. It involved Mom and the in-laws, fireworks, and a few angry neighbors. Let’s just say it didn’t exactly go well.

Why are there so many bad managers?

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

I really like Kathy Sierra’s post, “Success” should not mean “Management,” in the Creating Passionate Users blog. It is about how career success is measured and rewarded in companies, especially tech companies. For the most part, there is pretty much one track for advancement, and that is the management track. She draws our attention to this and proposes that companies develop alternate tracks for advancement that reward people who rock at their jobs, and encourage them to continue to rock at what they love to do.

This is why your computer doesn’t work – the inside scoop

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Today the final straw was added to the one ton weight of hay piled on my dromedarian back. I’m flat on the ground, dilapidated, and I refuse to go one step further as the smelly, flea-bitten work-camel that I am.

Let me explain:

“Be Prepared” – No Longer a Motto just for Scouts

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

Today there is another great post on the Escape from Cubicle Nation site. In light of the recent Intel layoffs, this post gives some sound advice on how to “shore up” your finances and get together a “back-up” plan for your career so you are not entirely dependent on the one job you have now – which if you are in the software industry you will most likely lose within the next 1 to 3 years. I have three concerns, however, that this article does not address.
