Mixing it up with a Little Mixology

The place I work decided to do an experiment and create an internal blog system. Employees are encouraged to write about anything – work related or not. They are in the Web 2.0 business, so it is just an experiment to see what people do with their blogs. I’ve been trying to figure out what to write about.
At first I thought I could write about QA, but nobody at work really wants to read about that. So far, only two other people have started internal blogs. One is about potatoes (and is a very good blog) and the other has one posting – a book review on IT time management (which noone wants to read about). I thought that maybe I could just write a blog about myself – a narcissicistic journey – but noone wants to read about that either.

I went to the cookbook store the other day to find a vegetarian cookbook and ended up also buying a sale book called “The New York Bartender’s Guide to Cocktails & Mixed Drinks” by Stuart Walton. I’ve always been fascinated by cocktails. It is probably because I grew up in Nevada where cocktail waitresses seemed like the luckiest people – they got to wear costumes to work and were like princesses (from my little girl perspective). Cocktails also involved major accessorizing from glassware to paper umbrellas to various fruits and pickled vegetables. Shirley Temples were my staple drink and I would save the paper umbrellas for my Barbies. I was also a big fan of Sergio Leone Westerns where Clint Eastwood would roll into a dusty town and demand whisky – the whole bottle. I was probably the only kid who took my applejuice neat in a tumbler, poured from a crystal decanter. As an adult, I rarely go to bars and when I do my mind goes blank. I don’t know what to order, so I usually end up with a rum and coke. This book looked like a good primer on cocktails – especially the classics.

Then, the idea struck me. Inspired by the Julie/Julia Project, I thought I can mix my way through this book and blog about it on the internal blog at work. While not appropriate material for work, it is a startup company – our launch parties involve tequila shots for everyone – people will want to read it, and until we get a “real” personnel director it should be ok.

So here are the re-posts of my adventures in mixology – and my adventure in blogging about inappropriate materials at work.
